Ch. 8 of The Heart's Landscape, Snakes and Ladders, is now posted. Faiza Hussain of Captain Britain and the MI:13 shows up in this one, because she works nicely here as a foil, a religious and peaceful person who 100% thinks superheroes are awesome, rather than being suspicious of the general concept as Joel is.



I love Faiza.

Right? I love that panel. I think she was technically the second Muslim female hero (Monet St. Croix was earlier) but the first visibly religious one. The writer got a group of Muslim women to advise him on the character's creation so they avoided a lot of the cringier pitfalls.

That's a good plan. I rely a lot on my readers to help me shape characters, because much of my work is crowdfunded these days. The Fennec is one of my Muslim superheras, really a trickster at heart, inspired by some classic lore from that region.
