Things I have attempted to look up recently, for fanfic reasons:
- what the hangy things that barristers wear are called (answer: "bands", usually, but also apparently "legal tabs")
- how someone might construct a letter bomb (few satisfactory answers found, although the easiest kind seem to be incendiary, using thermite)
- the Latin name, diet, and habitat of fishers
- the life of Archibald Lampman
- alternative explanations for Xavier's paralysis, besides that crazy-ass "alien dropped a stone block on him" comicverse reason
- the medical name for a lump in the throat (answer: globus hystericus)
- the context for a particular quote from Cyril of Jerusalem
- why Kai Winn and Kai Opaka wore different robes even though they held the same office (no answers found)

My guess would be that it's because they belonged to different orders. In the Catholic Church, if a member of a monastic order becomes Pope, (theoretically) he is supposed to wear his monastic habit along with his papal regalia. (This doesn't always actually happen.) Since there's so much papal imagery with the Kai, I figured I could make the analogy.
(Although celibacy obviously either isn't an issue or doesn't mean to them what it means to us. Sometime I'm going to have to take up in fic the question of what it means to join a monastic order on Bajor.)
