Doing a violent anti-hero (i.e., not Willy Loman or other sorts of anti-heroes) requires a very close, very instinctive familiarity with right and wrong, in my opinion. You're not going to find a more moral show on TV than The Sopranos, and Tony is a classic anti-hero. The writers don't give his actions a pass -- we can see that he is a brute, but his good qualities are just as real. That's good writing.

I think Kill Bill had enough humour to save it from "Duuuude, I don't subscribe to society's 'morals!'" Batman Begins had...zest, let's say. And Alfred is sort of the moral voice of society there, and we like Alfred. Michael Caine was brilliant casting, particularly the Cockney accent.

They were probably right not to go into Crane's backstory in the movie itself, but it's still apparent from Cillian's acting that there's something going on in Crane's head.
