Thinking on it, Batfans carp at Batman's moral justifications (Uh, Batman, if she ultimately died at the hands of someone you trusted rather than at the hands of the villain, how does this absolve you of her death?) but we generally see it as a) poor characterization (Batman would not do that!) or bad writing (have they forgotten about Episode X!!?)
The recent (recent? Okay, since 1986) trend toward a "dark and gritty" Batman frequently makes Batman look like a dangerous psychopath. (See Miller, Frank. 1986, 2002, 2005.) But we're told again and again that Batman is intelligent, self-aware, and has a rigid moral code. Fans (or at least, the corner of fandom I hang out in) take the middle and classify outlying data points as experimental error. Batman Begins isn't even a far outlying data point.
