I write religious characters all the time, and I think I'd quickly lose interest in a fandom where I couldn't. Most of the characters I write are canonically religious, so the struggle for me is about writing religion the way it is for them, not the way it is for me or the way I think it should be.
But, I think canon gets being religious wrong as much as fanfic. Religous characters on TV tend to be either unworldly and wise or hypocritical and misguided.
And I think you can work Augustine into almost anything. I once put him in a Silmarillion-based slashfic. But, he writes so eloquently about different kinds of love.
My pet peeve - when religion is invoked as the barrier to slash. Two out of the four mainstream Jewish denominations officially ordain gays and lesbians, and the other two do unofficially. Plenty of Christian denominations ordain gays and lesbians, and the seminary where I live is close to half queer. I know it's a big cultural issue in the US, but seriously, 'boys shouldn't boff' is hardly the most important or interesting thing any religion has to say to the modern world.
