A short piece for New X-Men, "A Chassis Made of Cars" (2,200 words). Wither junkyard fic! Hooray!

"Lately even my sculptures are looking worried, rearing backward on their piston legs, their wire-tendrils curling up tight. Jittery artillery, with broad bony sails of warped metal, like a human pelvic bone. I sit down on my milk crate, eating this damp ham and cheese sandwich that's been sitting in a fridge for too long, and stare at the shape of my current piece of work. It's cryptic, and I no longer know what I meant by it. All I can see is a tilt to the top piece that reminds me of Laurie's shoulders, the way she stands when she's nervous. Did I intend that? My problem is I never start out with a plan..."

Man, your Wither fic kicks my Wither fic's ass.

I can see now why Kevin is doing so poorly in the actual comics. He's a character who works best when you're viewing things from his perspective, seeing the way looks filtered through the sieve of his bitter and unforgiving mind. Because he really doesn't forgive - not himself, not Dani, not anyone.

I'd really like to know how Kevin came to be living in this junkyard - is this the aftereffect of what happened in the comics, or of some other incident? I liked the way you emphasized Kevin as an artist, and more specifically as a sculptor; it makes an ironic kind of sense to make the boy who can't touch love making things with his hands.

No way, yours has plot. I'm very eager to see where you go with it, and I really like your angle that he's trying to find a "good" way to use his powers.

This takes place after Kevin leaves Xavier's the first time (which happened at the end of New Mutants #6), when he tried to kill Donald Pierce and Dani used her powers on him. The picture is actually from New X-Men #3 when Dani and Emma talk him into coming back.

Now, of course, Kevin's run off yet again in #22. If the Hellions don't look for him in a junkyard then I give up on them.

Because he really doesn't forgive - not himself, not Dani, not anyone.

It's hard to come down on one side or the other between Dani and Kevin. On the one hand, she was right: she had to stop him from killing, she had no other safe means at her disposal, and she did apologise to him. On the other hand, her facial expressions in the comics are so distasteful. You can't escape the impression that this kid creeps her out and she's not sorry he's leaving -- except for the reason that it means she's failed.

And yet obviously Kevin has to let this go, somehow. Brian calls him "a black hole of bad energy" and he's not far wrong.
